Your wedding ring is the one thing from your big day that will last a lifetime… So here’s our top five tips when you buy wedding rings to make sure you choose the perfect ring:

Tip 1: Choosing the correct finger size and comfortable fit

Always have your finger professionally measured. Take advice from the jewellers and use your own judgement, especially if you are not used to wearing a ring. Depending on the width of the ring, different ring gauges should be used to measure your finger. measure your finger

Your finger can fluctuate in size and this needs to be taken into consideration. Various criteria can result in changes in finger size, these include the time of the day, the time of year (outside temperature), your overall health and weight and your physical activities. If time allows it’s always worth considering having your finger measured more than once. The optimum time to have your finger measured is mid-late afternoon.

The most comfortable rings are slightly rounded on the inside (rather than flat) so there is a little less contact with the skin.

Tip 2: Metal choice, which one is right for you?

If you already have an engagement ring styles then you need to choose the same metal to avoid extra wear. If you are wearing the ring on its own, then you need to think about your work and leisure activities as well as your preference on the colour of the metal.

Platinum is the hardest wearing, heaviest and the purest precious white metal. However, if platinum is a little more expensive than you had planned for then palladium is a good alternative. Palladium is part of the platinum family and is roughly half the weight of platinum and therefore a great alternative.

If you are considering a gold ring then 18ct gold is the preferable option when considered against 9ct gold. This is due to the actual gold content (twice as much as 9ct) and this makes the ring much more durable. It’s also less likely to cause a reaction with the skin.

As gold is naturally yellow, other white metals are added to produce white gold. White gold has a slightly yellow hue and for this reason most pieces of white gold jewellery are rhodium plated (a surface finish) to give a bright white polished finish. The rhodium plating will eventually wear off but it can easily be re-applied by most reputable jewellers.

For those who are not used to wearing a ring, titanium is a great option. It’s a very lightweight metal and therefore doesn’t feel cumbersome when worn. Titanium rings can incorporate precious metals and can be very contemporary in design. Generally speaking they are a very affordable option. Due to the strength of Titanium it does however have a down side that it cannot be adjusted easily. So if in the future your finger size changes then you may have to buy a new ring.

Tip 3: Timescale

We would suggest that you start to look for wedding rings at least 2-3 months before the wedding. Most wedding rings are made to order and if you are having a bespoke ring made to your own specification, then these can take up to 6-8 weeks to manufacture once the final design has been decided upon.

When you collect your wedding ring be sure to try it for size to ensure a comfortable and secure fit. You may also decide to have your affordable engagement ring on Italo cleaned and polished a week or two before the wedding so that the two rings look spectacular on your wedding day.

Tip 4: Lifestyle Suitability

If you suffer with allergies then platinum, palladium and titanium are all well worth considering. These are hypoallergenic metals and are less likely to cause irritation than other metals. In addition, 18ct yellow gold and high palladium white gold are potential options to choose.

Consider your occupation and your lifestyle. If you are physically active with your hands, then you may want to avoid lighter weight ring profiles (1.5mm depth or lower). These rings are likely to be less durable and may become misshapen over time.

We recommend medium weight rings which have a depth of 1.7mm and heavy weight rings which have a 2.1mm depth.

Tip 5: Choosing the perfect wedding ring to suit your engagement ring

Always choose the same metal for your wedding ring that you had for your engagement ring so that there is even-wear when the two rings are worn together.

Try and match the depth of your engagement and wedding rings to avoid having a step from one to the other.

We also recommend keeping the profile (shape) of the wedding ring as close as possible to that of the engagement ring so that the two rings complement each other. When the rings are worn together they should look like a pair.

Then all you need to decide is if you want your swedding ring plain, diamond-set or patterned.

We also offer a bespoke wedding ring service if your wedding ring needs to be made to fit with your engagement ring or you would like a more unique wedding ring design.
